Scientists in Victoria's Goulburn Valley are embarking on research to help orchardists grow new pear crops in half the time.
The Department of Primary Industries in Tatura is developing a small orchard and laboratory to test new varieties and management practices. Senior research scientist Ian Goodwin says it could be just the shot in the arm the industry needs.
"What we're really aiming to do is try and reinvigorate to stimulate the pear industry to get them to start growing these new varieties of pears," he said.
"But also doing it using this management practice so they can get high early yields within the timeframe for four to five years after planting."
Mr Goodwin says it's hoped the varieties will open up additional export markets into Asia.
